Samoa Air has become the first airline in the world to charge passengers strictly by weight. On its only international route between Samoa and American Samoa, each kilogram you weigh will set you back about $1 (R9.20), with scales at check-in to make sure you factor in the cheeseburger you had for lunch. “Planes are run by weight and not by seat, and travelers should be educated on this important issue,” said chief executive Chris Langton. “The plane can only carry a certain amount of weight and that weight needs to be paid. There is no other way.” The news has been greeted with dismay by the Samoan national rugby team.
