A first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, complete with notes in the margins from author JK Rowling, sold for £150,000 (R2.1 million) at an auction on 21 May 2013. That’s a lot of money, but not nearly as much as the $11.5 million (R103.5 million) someone paid for a copy of John James Audubon’s Birds of America, making this ornithological masterpiece (complete with life-size illustrations) the most expensive printed book ever sold. But Birds of America should soon be knocked off its perch as the Old South Church in Boston puts a copy of The Bay Psalm Book up for auction – the first book ever printed in America, which is expected to fetch over $15 million (R135 million).
