Main stay

Part of the standing rigging on a sailboat, it is the cable or rope which supports the mast from the front of the boat to the top of the mast. Today it’s use in the vernacular, as in ‘He was the mainstay of the organization,’ meaning someone or something on which there is a principal dependence. A nautical term that has now become part of everyday language
