Took the wind out of his sails

Today we use this expression to describe getting the overhand or the best of an opponent in an argument. Originally it described a battle maneuver of sailing ships whereby they would take the wind out of the opponents sails by sailing upwind or to windward causing the other vessels to slow or stop. A nautical term that has now become part of everyday language
