Whipping boy

Whipping the end of a rope is to wrap a light line around the ends to prevent the lines from unraveling. If this was not done correctly, the crew member who had done the job would become the ‘whipping boy’ and face punishment. Today, the  expression is used to describe someone who takes the blame for others. A nautical term that has now become part of everyday language
